A little about Art ClassHello! My name is Donna Lurie and I am thrilled to be back as Culver’s Art/Sculpture teacher. Before joining the Culver team, I worked as a teaching artist in Highland Park, IL, Evanston, IL, and all around Chicago in a variety of schools and art centers. I also helped develop the Inside Out Art Studio in Portage Park with my husband and master mask maker Jeff Semmerling.
It was back in grade school when I became sure that I wanted to be an artist. I began my BFA studies at the University of Michigan School of Art in Ann Arbor and completed my BFA with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I stayed on at SAIC as a student in their intensive art education certification program. As an art student, I realized that I would not be the kind of artist who enjoyed working in isolation in a studio. I much prefer to be a part of a collaborative team, which is why I am so happy to be a full time teacher working with Pre-K through 8th Grade students in a community of dedicated and talented educators. I encourage parents to contact me if they have any interest in volunteering in the art room. I occasionally send out requests for volunteers as the students get into more involved projects. It is always great to have extra hands in the art room as we get involved with fiber arts, ceramics and creating auction items for the Pasta Dinner event. I am always working on making the art room a more peaceful, inspirational and functional work space for art exploration and creation. This year, as we work on projects, K-8 classes will have many discussions about art history and will work on developing art vocabulary. As the year progresses, keep your eyes out for art displays from all classes throughout the building. There is a lot of talent to show off at Culver School. |
