Students in grades K-5 receive 30 minutes of art per week. Grades 6-8 have art everyday for half of a quarter during the school year. Pre-K (AM and PM) has art once a week for 15 minutes.
Kindergarten
is working on gaining control over their art materials as they practice basic skills. We start with drawing and coloring, then move on to cutting and gluing. We will work on combining shapes, lines and colors to draw people and objects and to create collages. While drawing and painting we will focus on creating patterns and movement in our artwork. We will also get comfortable using the iPad as an art tool.
First Grade
is learning all about the Elements of Art. They will be using their knowledge of lines, shapes, colors, texture, proportion and space for their upcoming Peter and the Wolf Project. Future projects include creating paintings based on art history lessons and making patterns and textures in ceramics.
Second Grade
is working on developing their 3-D drawing skills. Soon we will embark on our fabulous Bee Project. This project involves creating a multi media collage and pollination installation. Future Projects focus on creating and analyzing artwork through an artist's use of Elements and Principals of Art. We will also make patterns and textures in ceramics and learn hand building techniques.
Third Grade
will be incorporating several lessons into one. For our upcoming project, the third grade is studying turtles, hexagons and color theory. Future projects will delve more deeply into color theory and the Elements and Principles of Art. We will also make an awesome ceramics project which will link to their science studies on organisms and adaptation.
Fourth Grade
will enter the wonderful world of weaving. We have started off with some intricate drawings of woven ribbons to get their brains ready for the real thing. Future projects involve ceramics and creating paintings based on art history lessons.
Fifth Grade
is off and running on their first art history unit. Currently we are focusing on the art of Jean Dubuffet. In the 1940's he established "Art Brut." Then he journeyed into the world of the "Hourloupe." Not sure what that is? Ask a 5th Grader!
Sixth Grade
will be in the Art Room during 2nd Quarter. During their 5 week block, the sixth grade will work out their fine motor muscles as they puzzle out a string art project, sculpt an ancient Egyptian themed ceramics project and practice drawing techniques.
Seventh Grade
will be in the Art Room during 4th Quarter. During their 5 week block, Grade 7 will delve into the study of trompe l'oeil and the history and evolution of anamorphic art. In the midst of all that art history, will carve out time to sculpt a fun and challenging ceramics project.
Eighth Grade
is currently in the Art Room creating colorful soft sculpture cubes. After making a themed paper sculpture cube, the eighth grade students practiced sewing a soft sculpture cube. They learned how to thread a needle, tie knots and stitch into felt using embroidery floss. The felt cubes from block one will soon be on display. For the final two weeks of their 5 week block, the eighth grade will sculpt a lizard using colorful air dry clay and work on a short term fashion design drawing.
